First-Time Homebuilder Checklist

Building a new home is a big deal. We know you may not know exactly where to begin your journey to your new home, and that's why we've created this helpful First-Time Homebuilder Checklist. Follow these steps, and the process will be organized and enjoyable.

Lets-Do-this-flyer - Steps

  • Establish Your Buying Power: The best first thing you can do when you are considering building a new home is to determine your budget. Too often first-timers will go out and fall in love with a model home only to find it is out of their price range/affordability. Connecting with a mortgage lender to determine your affordability will save you precious time and avoid heartbreak.
  • Prioritize Your Must-Haves: After you know what you can afford, you have to figure out what's most important. By creating a priority list of what is most important, you can clearly see how many of your must-haves will fit in your budget. Many times, first-time homebuilders will get caught up in other "nice to have" features that they don't address the main reason for building a new home. Identifying what is the highest priority will keep you focused on the big picture.
  • Get the Scoop: Start talking! If you are looking in a specific neighborhood, then why not knock on a few doors and get to know the locals? Ask about their building experience and how the process went. They will give you an honest account of their triumphs and challenges, so you can go into building a new home with eyes wide open.
  • Learn How the Process Works: When considering a new home from Holt, we encourage you to spend an adequate amount of focused time visiting home sites, walking homes under construction to gain an in-person understanding of the homebuilding process and timeline. It's understandably easy to become hyper-focused on the finished product, exemplified by our decorated model homes. While the finished product is beautiful and exciting to imagine living in, we want you to be familiar with our entire building process from breaking ground to final touch-ups.
  • Remember to Have Fun: While building a home always comes with its own challenges, remember to enjoy the process and have fun along the way. You're building a new home of your very own! Arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible so that you can go into the purchase of your first home with confidence, understanding, and, best of all, excitement!
